We are committed to providing work experience opportunities for high school students from across a range of occupations. We will achieve this through a management commitment to work experience, communication with school career advisors and an application process available to all students.

Collier & Miller has a strong culture of training and include work experience as an important avenue for recruitment of potential new employees. We offer work experience during the year in the following jobs; Fitting-Machining, Sheet-Metal, Welding-Fabrication, Warehousing and Retail Sales Assistant.

Successful high school students will experience exposure to their selected job. Collier and Miller will ensure they experience genuine and actual work that would be expected of any new employee. This is achieved through the delivery of a work experience program along with collaboration with a workplace mentor. Each work experience is conducted in blocks ie: 1 week full time 38 Hours.

Work Experience Programs

  • Fitting-Machining

Your work experience will take place as part of our machine-shop. The machine-shop is a section within Collier and Miller Engineering that provides machining services to both external and internal customers. You can expect to commence your work experience with a safety induction aimed at ensuring you understand risks involved when working in an industrial environment. Once the safety induction is complete you will be teamed up with a workplace mentor to experience daily work in a machine shop. Your duties will include; machine shop workplace maintenance, observing the operation of machinery including lathes, mills and CNC equipment. You will be required to assist your mentor with daily tasks. Restriction on the use of equipment may be required due to workplace safety and risk analysis requirements.

  • Sheet-Metal

Your work experience will take place as part of our sheet-metal shop.The sheet-metal shop is a section within Collier and Miller Engineering that provides sheet metal services such as cutting, folding, bending and fabrication of plate and sheet for both external and internal customers. You can expect to commence the work placement with a safety induction aimed at ensuring you understand risks involved when working in an industrial environment. Once the safety induction is complete you will be teamed up with a workplace mentor to experience daily work in a sheet-metal shop. Your duties will include sheet-metal shop workplace maintenance, observing the operation of sheet-metal machinery including brake-press, guillotine and CNC presses. You will be required to assist your mentor with daily tasks. Restriction on the use of equipment may be required due to workplace safety and risk analysis requirements.

  • Welding-Fabrication

Your work experience will take place in our welding-fabrication shop. The welding-fabrication shop is a section within Collier and Miller Engineering that provides welding and fabrication services to both external and internal customers. You can expect to commence the work experience with a safety induction aimed at ensuring you understand risks involved when working in an industrial environment. Once the safety induction is complete you will be teamed up with a workplace mentor to experience daily work in a welding shop. Your duties will include welding-fabrication workplace maintenance, observing the operation of fabrication machinery including MIG and TIG welders, Plasma profile cutters, digi-benders, bandsaws and overhead cranes. You will be required to assist your mentor with daily tasks. Restriction on the use of equipment may be required due to workplace safety and  risk analysis requirements.

  • Warehousing

Your work experience will take place in our bulk warehouse. The bulk warehouse is where all goods inwards are received by Collier and Miller, processed and forwarded onto departments. You can expect to commence work with a safety induction that will ensure you understanding the risks involved when working in a busy warehouse. Once the safety induction is complete you will team up with a workplace mentor to complete daily work in the warehouse. Duties include verifying deliveries, part numbering, transporting stock to departments, storing stock. You will also see how the purchasing system works and how the warehouse interacts with both internal and external customers.

  • Retail Sales Assistant

You will begin work experience as a member of the Retail Sales team in either the Industrial or Trade section. The retail department is part of Collier and Miller Sales and provides customer service for a range of products for customers across a broad range of industries. You will join the team with a workplace mentor and learn aspects of working in a busy retail environment. During your placement you will experience how to serve customers, put away stock, maintain the workplace to a high standard, use the Point of Sale system to sell products and services to customers.

Work experience is aimed at high school students looking to do work experience as part of their school curriculum.
